Personality/Background: Kukoa is the first born fire lion in over two hundred generations of lions in the Makai Pride being two months older than his cousin Bosko. When he was 3 years, he started to wander away from the Makai Pride after having a dream about saving the pride. His grandfather, Kojo, Leader of the Makai Pride at that time, knew of his turmoil as he had had a similar dream, and so allowed him to come and go from the pride as he saw fit. It was during one of his earlier wanderings that he stupidly decided to hunt a crocodile for some food. He won, but the battle was not easy; Kukoa now bore a large scar across his muzzle as proof of his victory.
When Kukoa finally left the Makai Pride, he took with him two lionesses, Ishari and Ciera, and the three started a new pride which they dubbed the Migogoro Pride. By the time they had settled near a village hidden in the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro, four more lionesses had joined the Pride. But Kukoa was a troubled leader. Yes he was always successful when defending the Pride against rogue males, sometimes even resorting to his fire lion form in order to intimidate the more demanding foes. But at night, his prophetic dreams troubled him something fierce and he would often be forced to lie awake in fear of the dreams he would have... especially seeing that the majority of those dreams were based around the destruction of the Makai Pride. Plus there was the torment of having feelings for a black and tan dog that he had seen numerous times in the village and the fact that, though he loved his pride and was - at that time - awaiting the birth of his first litter of cubs, he felt more attracted to the dog than he did his own kind.
That black and tan dog was Vapour Haythen and it was with her that he found himself able to relax and talk about his prophetic dreams and troubles. He confided in her all his little secrets, like how he loved to play tricks and how he loved to run like a cheetah. Before he knew it, their friendship had grown into something more... and that was when the greatest thing that could have happened to him was ripped away. What started out as having a quiet conversation with the one he secretly loved ended up turning into a fight for his life. Vapour's family had decided that they were going to surprise her with a visit to Africa, and when two of her masters - Jett and Joe - went crashing through the Savannah in search of her, they accidentally disturbed a bull elephant in must. While Vapour had successfully managed to rescue Joe from the rampaging elephant without any injury to either herself or her master, Kukoa had hesitated on showing himself to her family for fear of them hating him. In the end, he chose Vapour's love over Vapour's hate and leapt at Jett in order to try and push him away from the elephant's path, knowing that it would have been near impossible for them to both get out unscathed. All Kukoa remembers after that is hearing the elephant's angry trumpet and a searing pain running through his back before blacking out.
It wasn't until after he had woken up from pelvic reconstruction surgery that he learnt from Vapour that her family believed him to have attacked Jett instead of saving him from the rampaging elephant, and that it had taken everything she had in order to fight them and get him to the zoo in time. At that point, he knew that he had been one lucky lion. Kukoa spent a week in the zoo's hospital, recovering from his ordeal and the entire time he was there was spent thinking about what had happened and what needed to happen. When he was let loose, the first thing he did was go in search of Vapour... only to be found by her oldest brother. During the severe argument that followed, Vapour ran off... and Kukoa knew what he had to do. Once he found her again, he made the hardest decision of his life; he left her.
In the three years that separated that day to the day that he saw Vapour again, the only thing on Kukoa's mind was the black and tan dog. Even his lionesses could tell that he was hurting, and it was Ishari who practically ordered him back to his chosen female in an attempt to return happiness to his life. So it was that Vapour and Kukoa returned to their secret love life. However, when word reached Kukoa of Vapour having played even a small part as defence in the Makai Massacre, he instantly feared for her life and rushed over to Australia as soon as he could. Upon reaching Australia, it is discovered that - even though his brother had done everything he could to try and protect the Makai Bloodline by splitting the pride (including giving him Makai males and females with cubs as well as his own chosen queen and his cubs and heir) - the Makai Pride was destroyed. The grief that struck him at that point was enough to send him over the edge if it hadn't been for Vapour.
Finally resolving to renew the Makai Pride, and thus accepting what fate had handed to him at birth, Kukoa did all he could to make sure that his brother's efforts were not in vain. And this time he had the help and support of his love, Vapour, whom he gave up his lion life for and married as a human. Together at last, he and Vapour were happy to no end. They had four pregnancies together, their first giving birth to quadruplets. Their last child, Kadogo, was their smallest, and though he arrived through the near death of his mother, it was he who returned to his father's heritage and led the new Makai Pride into a new age.
